What is PETG? A Game-Changer for SPC Flooring Production

What is PETG?

PETG, or Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol-modified, is a thermoplastic polyester celebrated for its durability, chemical resistance, and affordability. Widely used in industries like 3D printing and packaging, PETG’s impact-resistant and thermoformable properties are paving the way for a new application—SPC flooring production.

To further understand the distinction between PET and PETG in flooring production, it’s important to look at the structure and properties of PET itself. PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) consists of repeating (C10H8O4) units, making it a strong, lightweight polymer commonly used in packaging and textiles. It is also widely recycled, identified by the resin identification code 1 (♳).

PET-PETG-Material-Comparison

According to the National Association for PET Container Resources (NAPCOR), PET is defined as a material derived from terephthalic acid (or dimethyl terephthalate) and mono ethylene glycol. At least 90% of the mass of monomers used in its formation consists of these compounds. PET must exhibit a melting peak temperature between 225°C and 255°C,  as identified in the second thermal scan under ASTM D3418, with heating at a rate of 10°C/minute.

While PETG shares a similar chemical foundation with PET, the addition of glycol during the production of PETG makes it less brittle, more pliable, and better suited for applications requiring higher flexibility and durability—such as SPC flooring production. This modification enhances its impact resistance and thermoformability, which is why StarsPlas sees PETG as a promising alternative for sustainable, high-performance flooring solutions. In collaboration with PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate), StarsPlas has developed a low-melting-point version of the material suitable for PETG flooring production, with a melt temperature range of 165°C to 175°C.

PETG Flooring: The Future of Sustainable Flooring

At StarsPlas, we are constantly seeking innovative, sustainable solutions for the flooring industry, and PETG is proving to be a breakthrough material. Traditionally, SPC (Stone Plastic Composite) flooring has been favored for its strength and ease of installation, but with PETG’s added benefits, we see an opportunity to create an even better product.

Here’s why PETG could revolutionize SPC flooring production:

  1. Increased Durability: PETG’s impact resistance rivals that of polycarbonate, providing superior performance in high-traffic areas. Floors made with PETG-SPC technology can withstand daily wear and tear without losing their aesthetic appeal.
  2. Cost-Effective & Efficient: PETG is not only a cost-effective material but also integrates seamlessly with existing SPC production lines—no equipment overhaul required. This boosts efficiency, making PETG-SPC flooring a smart choice for manufacturers.
  3. Sustainable: PETG is fully recyclable, aligning with modern sustainability standards. At StarsPlas, we’re committed to developing eco-friendly products, and PETG allows us to offer sustainable flooring solutions without compromising on quality.
  4. Design Flexibility: PETG’s versatility allows for a wide range of finishes and colors, making it easier to customize flooring designs for different applications, from luxury interiors to durable commercial spaces.

Why Choose PETG for SPC Flooring?

Switching to PETG Flooring Production enables manufacturers to deliver a product that is virtually unbreakable, eco-friendly, and resistant to harsh chemicals. This material offers the perfect combination of flexibility, strength, and sustainability, ensuring longer-lasting and more resilient floors.

PETG vs. Traditional SPC

While traditional SPC flooring already offers strength, PETG takes it a step further with higher chemical resistance and flexibility. Unlike PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate), PETG includes glycol, which reduces brittleness and makes the material easier to work with during production. The result? Flooring that not only resists wear and tear but also holds up better against chemical spills, scratches, and heat exposure.

The Future of SPC Flooring with PETG

Switching to PETG-enhanced SPC flooring could revolutionize the market. Manufacturers would benefit from reduced production costs due to PETG’s compatibility with existing lines, while consumers enjoy a higher-performing, longer-lasting product. Whether it’s a retail space with heavy foot traffic or a home kitchen prone to spills, PETG-SPC flooring could offer the best of both worlds—durability and aesthetic appeal.
